May’s Reading Catch-Up

May was a pioneering month!

Not in any great ways, just this one: I started posting on social media offering reviews to indie authors to feature on The Secret Library. So far, I’ve picked out speculative fiction books and reviewed them, but I wanted to integrate a bit more into the indie author world. May was the first month of reading and reviewing ARCs and books sent in by authors who want reviews.

I’ve wanted to do this for ages, ever since I got my copy of “Ancient Magic” in the post from Thames and Hudson publishers. I’m truly honoured to be gifted a book that someone has written to review.

The only downside is that the quality of the books I get to review is hit and miss. For sure, I’ve seen a little less editing and a few more discount book covers, but it’s allowed me to read books in the genre that I wouldn’t normally read. It’s always a really good idea to broaden reading horizons and this has been a great way to do it.

I get about in the indie author world a little bit – in a literary sense (just in case you’re as dirty minded as me!) – and from time to time you’ll stumble across debates about editing, book covers and the act of reading. Some authors question whether they need either an editor, a professional book cover or to read to produce a good, sellable book. Readers already know the answers to these questions: yes!

To any authors asking themselves these questions, if you make sure your book is properly edited and has a great front cover, your chances of success are much, much higher. And as an indie author myself, I want other authors to succeed too. That’s what our community is about: lifting each other up and helping each other as we walk the same path together.

We’re into June now and I’m already neck deep in some great reads, so watch out for those reviews coming in the next few weeks, including an ARC by Emma Mills – The Raven Queen.

If you’re an author and want a review for your book, check out The Secret Library Book Blog review policy and see what you think. Pop me an e-mail and I’ll be happy to speak with you about reviewing your book.

FYI, I’m also looking for more new releases to feature on our Friday New Release Feature. Another good reason to send me an e-mail.

Thank you for reading!
