Title: Taming Demons for Beginners
Author: Annette Marie
Genre: Urban fantasy
Release date: 13th September 2019
“Rule one: Don’t look at the demon.
When I arrived at my uncle’s house, I expected my relatives to be like me—outcast sorcerers who don’t practice magic. I was right about the sorcery, but wrong about everything else.
Rule two: Don’t listen to the demon.
My uncle chose a far deadlier power. He calls creatures of darkness into our world, binds them into service contracts, and sells them to the highest bidder. And I’m supposed to act like I don’t know how illegal and dangerous it is.
Rule three: Don’t talk to the demon.
All I had to do was keep my nose out of it. Pretend I didn’t find the summoning circle in the basement. Pretend I didn’t notice the shadowy being trapped inside it. Pretend I didn’t break the rules.
But I did, and now it’s too late.”

Family secrets in urban fantasy books usually involve a young girl learning about their family’s magical history for the first time. This one has the unusual premise of illegal magical dealings and I love it.
On urban fantasy TV of the 90s and early 00s (the likes of Charmed etc.) there was a gentle wave of magical creations turning into love interests and I love that this is a revival of that. I mean, haven’t they been totally wronged, especially if they’re being sold into magical slavery? They deserve to be happy, too.
It’s hard to say if this demon is the bad-boy type or not, but with all the bully romances now getting popular, it probably wouldn’t do so badly if he was. Something else that’s getting a resurgence from the 90s.
Where can I get it?
Taming Demons for Beginners has been out just long enough to have a paperback version as well as an e-book version. This one is going to look awesome on the bookshelf.
Both formats are available at the Amazon link here.
Thanks for reading!
