Top 5 Authors F-J

We’re on to the next five letters in the alphabet and five more awesome authors to talk about. In case you’re not sure what the dickens I’m talking about, Shana at Bionic Bookworm has challenged us book bloggers to find one awesome author for each letter of the alphabet for our Top 5 features for the month of March!

This is an amazing challenge, I love talking about my favourite authors and you can find the first five authors (A-E) in last week’s post a-right here. This week, let’s look at five more authors F-J.

F – F.C. Yee

I haven’t exactly worked out my top 10 authors of all time yet but this author is definitely on that list. F.C. Yee is responsible for one of my favourite books of all time: The Rise of Kyoshi which I reviewed last year with glowing praise.

This author writes like a dream, fully absorbing you into their world and that’s one of the many reasons that I found it so hard to put down The Rise of Kyoshi. I don’t doubt that the upcoming sequel The Shadow of Kyoshi will be just as addictive – July 2020 can’t come soon enough!

Better yet, this author is in the diversity game. The characters can be anyone, from anywhere and of any orientation and it makes reading their stuff all the more thrilling. Read their books, they’re amazing!

G – Georgia Tingley

I came across Georgia’s books when she asked me to review the first book in her Christian urban fantasy book Justice which was an amazing read as you can see here.

I’m not religious but I do enjoy reading all kinds of fantasy including the kinds where religion is front and centre. Georgia does a great job of bringing the characters to life but particularly, she has a talent for suspense and thrills which can take some dark turns. If she wanted to become a horror or a thriller writer one day, she’d be well suited for it.

Expect big feels and nail-biting moments when reading this author!

H – Julie Hall

Using her last name for this letter but Julie Hall had to make it onto this list. Just like Georgia Tingley, Julie writes Christian-themed fantasy fiction. You’d think I was a preacher the way I go on about Christian fantasy but it just so happens that these two authors do the genre a great service.

You will cry reading Julie’s books, she is the queen of feels. I read her book Huntress nearly two years ago and absolutely loved it. For some reason, I haven’t gotten around to reading the sequel to this book. Honestly, I think it’s because I’m worried I’m going to cry reading it. It’s a real possibility.

She knows just which nerves to tweak and how to suck us into her protagonist’s mind. Plus, her world-building skills are epic, she really turned Heaven into her own world in Huntress and she’s excellent at surprising us with unexpected twists. All of this makes her an incredibly well-rounded author and an absolute joy to read.

I – Intisar Khanani

I thought it might be difficult to find an author with an “I” name but then I remembered this gem. I read Sunbolt years ago and it was actually one of The Secret Library’s very first book reviews. I’d never heard of this author before but I was pleasantly surprised with her fantasy novella.

This author has travelled a lot and it shows. Her fantasy world of Karolene was a colourful, vivid place and the perfect setting for a fast-paced action fantasy that is Sunbolt. Again, I haven’t read anything else by this author but I really need to take the time out to do so because I really enjoyed this book and it stands to reason her others are similarly awesome!

J – Jeremy Smith

Another author who popped into my inbox one day, I’ve reviewed two of Jeremy Smith’s books in his Tilly Hart series and I really hope he asks to me to read book three. I reviewed A Rhyme of Dark Words and Rise of the White Witch last year, the first two books in the series about a young witch discovering her powers in a mysterious new town.

This series has all the hallmarks of a book I would have especially loved as a teenager: an unsuspecting girl finding out she has magical powers, a magical world adjacent to our own and two plucky sidekicks ready for action. Jeremy has a talent for mixing light-hearted characters in an incredibly dark atmosphere and it’s a combination that takes much skill to accomplish.

In short, this author is a real up and coming talent!

Thanks for reading!
