What a ride this was, wow.
Heir of Shadows follows Selena Foster and her triplets, Alexandra and Lily, as they are kicked out of yet another family home and sent off to Daizlei Academy, a school for supernaturals. Alexandra has the power of fire, Lily the power to heal and while Selena credits her anger and boxing prowess to her heightened senses, we don’t truly know what her powers are until the end of the book.
I legitimately thought, when I started reading, that this was going to be another unnecessarily super-angsty teenager but Selena’s character development is masterful in this book. After their parents died, Selena took charge of taking care of her sisters and after they join Daizlei, they begin to realise that their co-dependence may have been stopping them from becoming healthy individuals. At school, they thrive, even if they do get into trouble ever now and again.
No longer needing to watch her sisters, Selena can concentrate on herself and her needs. She starts competing professionally in boxing, making friends and starting to realise that she might actually be able to live a normal life. But when Lily and their cousins are kidnapped by demons, Selena is forced to tap into the full potential of her powers to save her.
Heir of Shadows was such an entertaining read and Selena was a surprisingly likeable character. The story saved up the major action for the end and it promises even more in the coming sequels, which I can’t wait for!
The dynamic between the sisters starts off as a little toxic but as they have no parents and have had to fend for themselves forever, it’s no surprise. It was so heartwarming to see them supporting each other in more wholesome ways as time went on and they all began to grow.
Selena’s powers (no spoilers here) are huge in this supernatural world and in her attempt to save Lily from demons, she puts herself in the cross-hairs of some dangerous but as yet unknown people.
Had to give this one five stars. All the feels, the action and the complex character development more than earned it!
Heir of Darkness is book one in the series and I think you can get this series either individually or as a whole set. Yup, the series is complete and ready to read! Check Heir of Darkness out on Amazon here.
Thanks for reading!
