I didn’t expect this book to be as short as it was but I’ll admit, it’s allowed me to catch up on my reading target for the year!
First Bite is a short story following Catherine, a vampire who recently turned eighteen. Her parents are determined to find a good match for her within their vampire commune so she can fulfil her destiny: being a dutiful wife. Someone needs to drive a stake through that expectation.
Catherine isn’t thrilled by the prospect but she understands that this is her duty and without the protection of her commune, she is as good as dead. But when she meets Benedict at one of the commune’s extravagant balls. They fall for each other almost straight away but with the long list of suitors asking for her hand in marriage, Benedict doesn’t even make the short-list of her father’s chosen few. They continue to meet in secret, trying to figure out how they can be together.
There wasn’t a lot of time to get to know Catherine or Benedict but Catherine came across as a rather meek girl who did as she was told, but would make exceptions for passion. She was naive but in a rather endearing way. She has been moulded for a submissive position as a wife and breeding vessel and it’s awesome to see her following her heart rather than allowing the men in her life to chart the course of her life.
I was a bit unsure about Benedict’s character to begin with but he was easy to warm to after I decided that he wasn’t just a cad trying to steal Catherine’s virtue. (I got the impression that the book was set in a time when this was unthinkable). Catherine and Benedict create a wonderfully warm bubble around themselves, separating themselves from the cold, dutiful population of their commune.
There wasn’t a lot of time to dwell on imagery in this book but I would have liked to see more of it. The vampire commune appears to live in a large castle all together as one small society and I would have loved to have a more vivid picture of that place. An old castle filled with vampires is a setting that needs real attention to detail!
I can’t wait to read more about Catherine and Benedict in the first official book in the series, First Bite is a great taster of a promising paranormal romance.
