Technology moves so fast these days that even at 30 years old, you can – and will – feel like you’re overdue a check-in at the local nursing home. That is exactly how I’m feeling about my debut on TikTok.
I am old enough to have joined Facebook when I was 16 years old, which didn’t require videos and music. These days, both of these things are fundamental to a successful social media platform, so either we get on board or return to the stone ages.
Personally, I would be happy to disappear from social media completely and spend all the time I would have spent scrolling to go on adventures through the wilderness. Maybe get lost in the woods and join a commune of fairies, who knows? But, as it stands, if I’m not on social media, my chances of selling books are pretty low. I know for sure that I wouldn’t have the fanbase I have right now if it wasn’t for social media.
After a few awkward first videos, it’s safe to say that I’m not necessarily that comfortable on the platform yet, however, I feel that with a little time and some more experience, I will feel more at home.
TikTok is a great place to show off any books you have written and among my author friends, one half are on TikTok and swear by it, and the other half wouldn’t go near it with a ten-foot barge pole. Both sides are easy to understand. Some of us can’t fathom putting our faces on social media in video format and doing the fun dances and getting on board with the trends, because it’s super alien to us. But also, this new manner of expression and joining in with a community is a real mind-opening experience.
So far on TikTok, I’ve discovered people in the BookTok community tackling common issues among authors and readers, sharing and recommending their favourite books, and playing fun games with new friends. It is definitely quite a daunting prospect to get on TikTok if you’re not very comfortable making videos, but once you’re in this community, it’s a little addictive.
I’m still at the start of integrating into the BookTok community, but I can’t wait to get stuck in and hopefully sell a few books in the process!
If you’re on TikTok, my handle is @rosiewylorowenauthor and I intend to post at least once a day for the foreseeable future. All my videos tend to be book and writing related, so if that’s your kind of content, feel free to give me a follow!

I feel you on this, Rosie! 😂 But I’m also exploring TikTok and checking out other authors’ stuff… when I’m not derailed by dog or bunny videos LOL. Anyway, followed you! I’m at @mariesinadjan 😊

They ARE 😂 I’m doomed the moment I open the app and I’m greeted by animal videos. Who cares about booktok then? It takes me a while to remember what I logged in there for 😂🤣
