The Point of No Return – Book Review

Title: The Point of No Return

Author: Devyn Sinclair

Genre: Reverse Harem/Monster Romance

Rating: 4 Stars

Men like this don’t exist. Gorgeous, dark, angry, seductive…stone doesn’t come to life and leave me wanting more. It’s impossible.

Until it isn’t.

My name is Christine Daniels, and I am going mad.

It was supposed to be simple: one month, one opera, one chance to make my entire career. But now I’m going crazy.

I was only here to sing, but nothing in Paris is what it seems, and the old opera house feels very much alive. Voices echo through walls, gargoyles come to life, and I’m dragged into a whole new world that I never knew existed.

A world of monsters.

By day they whisper through stone, and by night they make me theirs. Fangs and wings and claws that leave me aching with need. Pleasure that claims me over and over until I only belong to them.

But darker monsters than mine are hunting me. In order to punish my mates, they’ve decided they want me. And because I’m not made of stone, I might not survive.”

My Review

** I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review **

I thought this was my first monster romance, it’s actually my second, but I think this one has the edge.

Christine became an overnight dancing sensation and is starring in an opera house in Paris as the star of the show. Little does she know that the opera house is guarded by three gargoyles, her mates, who will stop at nothing to make her theirs.

Alexander, Erik, and Marius turn to stone whenever sunlight touches the opera house, but during the night, they are free to roam as gargoyles or humans. Trapped with a curse that was activated when the original opera house burned down, they can never leave.

When other gargoyles living in Paris hear of Christine’s arrival, the men’s enemies start making plans to destroy Christine and thus, her connection with her mates.

This was a fun read, I’ve never read about a dancer performing as a celebrity in an opera house before. It’s a real testament to the author, who I already admire, as I’ve read a bunch of her books already.

There is a lot of sex in this book, and some trigger warnings might be needed for a few scenes, especially in Christine’s scene with Erik. But there is a lot of steam and as reverse harems go, is absolutely fantastic.

Paris is a great setting, the romance is great, there’s plenty of intimacy, and the ending is awesome. I don’t want to spoil anything, but this is a happily ever after done right.

The only things that struck me as a bit odd was the conflict between Christine’s mates and their enemy, Callum. Callum’s motive wasn’t really established. When Christine asks him why he would want to kill her, Callum says “because I can”, which seems strange when there wasn’t much tension built between them.

The romance was great, but the conflict and stakes had me questioning its strength a little.

All in all, would really recommend this book if you’re looking for a good reverse harem. Devyn Sinclair has a record in my book for some great books, and I can’t stop recommending them.
